Bill Gates Reveals Details of ‘Impressive’ Dinner With Trump
Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft and the Gates Foundation, who is worth $160 billion, has revealed the details of his three-hour dinner with President-elect Donald Trump.
Gates told The Wall Street Journal that the “wide-ranging” conversation, which included Elon Musk, focused heavily on public health issues. The Gates Foundation specializes in global health, among other philanthropic causes.
According to the tech tycoon, Trump was “excited” about fast-tracking a cure for HIV, similar to how Covid-19 vaccines were fast-tracked during the pandemic.
Gates was also “impressed” by how interested Trump was into solving other global health issues, such as polio.
In his farewell address on Wednesday, outgoing President Joe Biden warned of a “tech-industrial complex” and an “oligarchy” of powerful elites who wield increasing societal influence.
He was likely talking about the gaggle of tech billionaires who surround Trump, who appear to wield growing influence over affairs traditionally left up to the state.
Recently, Elon Musk negotiated an international prisoner swap; Musk and fellow tech giant Vivek Ramaswamy are heading Trump’s unofficial Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Mark Zuckerberg changed Facebook’s fact-checking policy, and last year announced he is a libertarian, in a move seemingly to placate Trump.
Gates may seem different than the other tech oligarchs, having been described as “a good kind of rich guy” who donates billions to worthy causes.
However, his interest in having a seat at the table with Trump and the other tech magnates may be as self-serving as the others.
An article from The Nation levied an array of criticisms against Gates, arguing he appointed himself an oligarch in philanthropy, technology, and journalism decades ago.
