CHP: Dirt bikers seen performing stunts on L.A. freeways escaped officers
Two dirt bike riders who performed stunts while weaving through traffic on Los Angeles County freeways Thursday night managed to evade authorities, officials announced on Friday.
The incident began around 3:45 p.m. when several calls were made reporting motorbikes and dirt bikes riding westbound on the 60 Freeway near Rosemead Boulevard in the South El Monte area.
Less than 10 minutes later, CHP officers located the motorcycles and initiated a traffic stop but two riders failed to yield and a pursuit began, the California Highway Patrol stated.
The riders weaved dangerously through freeway traffic, narrowly missing other drivers. One of the suspects reportedly tried to ram a motor officer with their bike.
A group of nearly 20 other riders, many not wearing helmets, joined the suspects during the chase. At times, they even waved to Sky5’s camera overhead.
The group stopped at a gas station to refuel during the chase and were seen performing stunts and wheelies on the street as officers trailed them.
CHP units ended their part of the pursuit when both riders began traveling into oncoming traffic while heading southbound on the northbound 710 Freeway lanes.
The CHP airship continued to monitor the motorcycles as they traveled onto several more freeways at varying speeds but at some point “the airship was unable to continue with the pursuit,” the CHP stated Friday.
Anyone with additional information regarding the incident was encouraged to contact Officer Silva, or Investigator Oviedo at 323-980-4600. After business hours, calls should be made to the Los Angeles Traffic Management Center at 323-259-3200.
