The National Weather Service is warning that a derecho with winds of up to 105 mph could blast across North Dakota and Minnesota Friday night into Saturday morning.

Ahead of the potent line of storms, the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) upgraded the severe risk from a level 3 of 5 "enhanced" outlook to a level 4 of 5 "moderate" risk for portions of eastern North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota.

Just before midnight, severe thunderstorm warnings started being issued in northwestern and west-central Minnesota, warning of 80 mph winds and possible tornadoes.

Flash flood warnings were also issued – including in Fargo-Moorhead – as the system brought torrential rain, with residents in warned areas advised to move to higher ground if possible.

"A Derecho may develop across parts of the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest tonight, especially in the Red and Orange (Moderate and Enhanced) Outlook Areas. A Derecho is a long lived line of thunderstorms with damaging winds," says the National Weather Service in Duluth.

Strong tornadoes are also possible in North Dakota and Minnesota.

According to the SPC, a swath of wind damage is likely in the path of the line of storms, stretching from the Dakotas through Minnesota and all the way to northern Wisconsin and the western Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
