U.S. Senator Ashley Moody visits Bay County to announce new immigration crackdown bill

BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – One of Florida’s United States senators visited Bay County on Thursday to introduce a new bill involving illegal immigration.

Ashley Moody’s ripple act would reimburse local and state agencies for helping enforce federal immigration policies.

It would expand the 2-87 g program, which gives officers local training on immigration policies. It is unclear how agencies would receive the money or exactly what expenses it would cover.

The sheriff says this will help give them some breathing room while they deal with some scheduling challenges that come with immigration enforcement.

“What Senator Moody is introducing in this act is the ability for us to get reimbursed for that, in other words, mileage. And many of these that we’ve done, both enforcement and transportation, have been bringing a deputy can’t pull a deputy off shift or detention deputy out of the jail. So it’s on overtime that we’re setting up. So the state has created the pot of money for reimbursement, and now Senator Moody’s working for federal reimbursement as well,” BCSO Sheriff Tommy Ford said.

Ford says 18 deputies are in the 2-87 g program, some are waiting for final certification. 18 detention deputies at the jail have gone through the warrant service officer training.

The House and Senate will still have to pass Moody’s Ripple Act.
